Sliding Mouse Guard & Travel Gate
Secure and versatile, this sliding mouse guard and travel gate is designed especially for use on British National Hive floors — and can easily be trimmed to fit Langstroth Hive setups too.
Key Benefits:
-
Dual functionality – Works both as a mouse guard to keep out rodents and pests, and as a travel gate to temporarily seal the entrance when moving colonies.
-
Sliding mechanism – The guard can be easily slid into place to reduce the entrance size or flipped/reversed to fully close the entrance for transport.
-
Durable materials & construction – Made from sturdy galvanised steel, paired with wooden frame runners and a bead fastener for secure fitting beneath the hive entrance.
-
✂Adaptable to hive types – Although sized for a National hive floor, the design allows for simple cutting down to fit Langstroth hive floors if needed.
Why It’s Important:
-
Mice, rodents, and unwanted pests can seriously damage a hive by eating comb, honey and pollen. This guard helps prevent that intrusion.
-
When transporting hives, being able to fully secure the entrance ensures bees stay safely inside and protected during movement.
-
The sliding latch allows beekeepers to adjust airflow and entrance size based on season or hive strength—helpful in both winter and active periods.
Usage Tips:
-
Slide the guard into the runners so that the perforated side is active for normal use (allowing bees in/out but restricting rodents).
-
When you need full closure (e.g., during relocation), flip or reverse the guard so the solid edge covers the entrance entirely.
-
For Langstroth floors: carefully measure and mark the required length, then use a hacksaw or metal cutters to trim the steel to the required size—ensuring a snug fit.
-
Clean and inspect the guard periodically to remove debris (dead bees, propolis) that may build up and block ventilation.
